When I first started to refinish this putter I was running out of inspiration. However, when I walked out into my garage and saw my olive drab Jeep, inspiration struck. This putter is a MacGregor Edgemont series, a very workmanlike and popular American clubmaker, and the print on the back of the club is in this very utilitarian block lettering. My Jeep and this block print inspired me to make a tribute to the old WWII Willys workhorse that drove GI’s around every theatre of combat.
Fortunately I also had some thick, durable, veg tanned olive drab leather which made for the perfect “Jeep” grip. To complement the drab leather, I did four black bands of whipping thread with brown in between to represent the Jeep’s four wheel drive, and the mud those four wheels slogged through on the way to victory.
The club head has a 10 degree loft, and is reset with new epoxy and a brass pin. The original 34.25″ hickory shaft has a St. Andrews bend, and was sanded, stained, and shellacked. The grip is 5oz. olive drab leather with black and brown linen whipping thread.
